Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) Overview Looking for Australian Cattle Dog puppies for sale? As the name implies, this breed originates Down Under. When Brits emigrated to Australia, they found that the European herding breeds wilted in the heat. Aussie cattlemen wanted a dog that could work hard in the hot, dry climate. They also needed their cattle dogs to be calm, intelligent, and not prone to barking.  While the lineage of this dog isn’t completely clear, it’s believed these canines are descended from the Bull Terrier, the Dalmatian, the Australian Kelpie, the Smooth Haired Scotch Merle Collie, and even the Dingo. Interestingly, the breed’s Dalmatian lineage means that Australian Cattle Dog puppies are born white before they get their color and spots. This breed has been known by many names, including the Queensland Blue Heelers and Australian Heelers. They are still commonly called Blue Heelers in the U.S.  The Australian Cattle Dog, or Blue Heeler, was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1980 and was grouped as Herding.

  • Color: The AKC breed standards state that the color should be blue, blue-mottled, or blue speckled and that these dogs can also have black, blue, or tan markings on the head. However, the red variety (not recognized by the AKC) has an even, red speckle and can have darker red markings on the head.

Australian Cattle Dog Temperament

If you want to buy an Australian Cattle Dog puppy, it’s smart to do a little research first. Like most herding dogs, these pups are athletic, energetic, loyal, and intelligent. This combination makes them easy to train, and also makes them great agility dogs. 

These canines have a powerful pack instinct and respond well to leadership. They need a strong owner to provide consistent but gentle discipline and guidance or they can get stubborn or unruly. 

Like many herding breeds, these pups are great with children but like to herd them. They may be tempted to nip at a child’s heels during running games, but they can be trained out of this behavior. 

This breed is shy and cautious with strangers, and focused socialization will be needed if you want to change this behavior. 

Australian Cattle Dog Health Issues & Life Expectancy

If you’re considering adopting an Australian Cattle Dog puppy, make sure you understand this breed’s special health considerations. The Australian Cattle Dog life expectancy is between 12-15 years. A relatively wide gene pool contributes to the vigor of the breed. While they are generally robust, some health concerns to monitor are:

  •   Hip Dysplasia
  •   Patellar Luxation
  •   PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)

All dogs should be kept current on shots and vaccinations, and be sure to take your pup in for regular checkups with your vet.

The Australian Cattle Dog’s coat is short, smooth, and water resistant. Their undercoat is short and dense.

A weekly brushing is all that’s required to keep the coat healthy. Bathe only as necessary.
